The probate record of William Lowe Gililland is useful in verifying the decendants of John Richardson Gililland.
Lincoln County, Missouri, Clerk of Court probate records have William L. Gililland as file number 258. Filed on 2 February, 1850, the witnesses to the document include his father, John Gililland, and his brother, John B. Gililland. At the bottom of the document, it is attested that "the only heirs and legal representatives" of William L. Gililland are as follows: John Gililland (his father), Charity Ligon, Margaret Moore, Jesse R. Gililland, Allen J. Gililland, and John B. Gililland, "his brother of whole blood", and Mary Gililland Gilmore, David P. Gililland, Nancy Clare, Elizabeth, Sarah, James R. Lewis C., ALexander L., and Levi S. Gililland, his "brothers and sisters of half blood." Click here to see this record.
This record confirms the belief that William L. Gililland never married, as no wife or children are named. Unfortunately, the record also further confuses the existance of another daughter of John and Elizabeth, Cynthia. She is recorded living in the household of John and Elizabeth, age 9, in the 1850 census of Lincoln County Missouri, a census taken more than 6 months after this probate filing. To not be named in this probate record would suggest she was not a child of John and Elizabeth. To further confuse the matter, buried in the Sulphur Lick Cemetery is Sinthy Gililland (1838-1859), daughter of John and Elizabeth.
Also not listed in this record are Levan Allen Gililland and Isaac W. Gililland. Levan has not been found in any record other than the original Loren A. Gililland source, and is presumed to have died during the trip by wagon from Kentucky to Missouri in late 1818 or early 1819. Isaac W. appears, age 26, with his wife Mary, living in the household of John and Elizabeth in the 1850 census. It was presumed that Isaac was another son of John, but this probate record refutes that belief. More likely, Isaac was a son of James Gilliland who remained in Kentucky after most of his brothers and sisters moved to Missouri.
